Likely Causes of Divorce

  Article By: James Walsh

Equations between married couples have changed drastically. While the reasons that lead to misunderstandings and trouble between a husband and wife remain the same, the circumstances have changed. Therefore, while marital problems always existed, now, couples are less inclined to suffer them and prefer to get divorced.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is probably the most difficult to discern and define. Yet, many marriages crumble under emotional abuse of one spouse by the other. Two people enter into a marriage promising love, support and companionship. However, oftentimes, the courtship period does not completely reveal a particular persons insecurities and negative tendencies. When a partner suffers from a deep inferiority complex or unresolved issues, these can manifest in the form of emotional abuse.

To make a partner feel inadequate and criticise them constantly, is a way of feeling a sense of control. The person suffering the physical abuse slowly loses confidence, self-esteem and any sense of self. Emotionally abused people become more dependent on the abuser as a result of this lost confidence. However, since it is easier to get divorced and move on these days, with a little support from family and friends, divorce becomes the preferred option.

Physical Abuse

It is shocking how universally prevalent physical abuse in marriages is. In fact, it is one of the major causes for divorce. The stress and increasingly hectic lifestyles have made people increasingly individualistic. They become aggressive and controlling and, sometimes, in a marriage, it takes the form of physical abuse. Studies have also revealed that many people who have been victims of physical abuse, become offenders themselves.

Some people are unable to resolve their issues and remain consistently abusive. A spouse may give the abusive spouse the benefit of doubt once but if the physical abuse continues, it is definitely a valid cause for divorce. It is often seen that physical abusers continue being abusive in all their relationships. Therefore, divorce is the only way out of a painful situation.

Infidelity

Infidelity is perhaps the most cited cause for divorce universally. The very premise of marriage is built on monogamy and complete faithfulness. However, infidelity has been a common occurrence from the days of yore. Perhaps, in the earlier days, people were more discreet about the affairs they had. Further, the number of women breaking their marital vows and are unfaithful, is on the rise.

Increasingly, both spouses have active careers. This allows them little time to keep the romance alive in the marriage and soon boredom sets in. People travel more and meet new people during the course of their jobs. This inevitably leads to attractions developing, which more often than not, results in an affair.

If a spouse discovers the infidelity of the other spouse, many times it becomes a strong case for a divorce. To build the relationship again and learn to trust the unfaithful spouse again can be a difficult task. Sometimes, the spouse who has had the affair might get so involved with the new person that divorce becomes the way out to start a new life.

Lack of Money

We live in an extremely materialistic world and having money can make a huge difference to the quality of life. When a couple gets married, love is enough to survive the honeymoon period. However, when the everyday realties of life set in, then love has to be backed by several factors. The lack of money can make life very difficult and survival issues get in the way of romance. A couple begins squabbling because life is so tough and soon there is no love lost between them. The economic aspect of a marriage is integral to its survival. The lack of money is often the cause of divorce.

Infertility

To have children is one of the main reasons why most people marry. Very few couples enter a marriage expecting not to have children. The infertility of a spouse and, therefore, the inability to have children can result in a deep sense of disappointment. If being a biological parent is extremely important to one partner, the infertility of the other partner can become the cause for divorce.

Conclusion

Marriage is a complex union of two people made even more difficult by idiosyncrasies and inadaptable natures. While it can be potentially the most rewarding relationship, it does, at all times, require effort and compromise. There are many causes for divorce and it is only a determined couple who can work around it and save a marriage.
