Oxbridge Personal Statements

  Article By: James Walsh

These public universities are also partially funded by the government. A major portion of the undergraduate fees are funded by the government. Both Oxford and Cambridge universities have been universally acknowledged as the leading universities in the world. That is why students always throng into these world-famous universities to find a place.

Entrance to Oxbridge is highly competitive and many a time even excellent candidates are not getting admissions. Even a small issue being asked in the application and the presentation of personal statements count a lot. Only an extraordinary person who can perform well even under hectic pressures can get into the university. The candidates should have an excellent understanding of the selection procedure of the particular course and the college.

Besides providing an accurate list of qualifications, the candidates must submit a personal statement which is the most important in the form. The personal statement must be fine-tuned as per the requirements of the Oxbridge application form.

An additional paragraph, mentioning the reasons as to why the candidate has chosen the particular college or an open application should be included. It is important to predict the grades required to apply to Oxbridge; otherwise there is no use in proceeding with it. The candidate should make sure that the personal statement fits into the space provided in the form.

Oxbridge would interview almost all the candidates who have applied. Personal statement would find a prominent place while conducting the interview. The interviewer would go through the statement and would use them as a basis for the interview. The candidates who apply to Oxbridge should assume that they will be questioned about everything they mentioned in their personal statements. The interviewer will also look into whether the personal statement reveals the character of the candidate. That is why it is necessary that the statement must be prepared by the candidates themselves. One can get assistance from various sources to complete the personal statement, but the candidates should not let others to write it for them.

As Oxford and Cambridge are part of the Universities and Colleges Admission Services (UCAS), the candidates can apply through UCAS and then fulfil the formalities demanded by the Universities. UCAS has been giving excellent guidance on how to complete the personal statement section in the form. It is quite natural that the admission tutors would look for bright students. The bright students would always have the capacity to research the course and career options carefully; they would be able to present well in the statements and show that they are well-organised and willing to learn more. Keeping all these things in mind, one should prepare a statement which should be clear, and shows his commitment.

The candidates should also explain in their personal statements, the various ways by which they are enriched to get into Oxbridge. In the process, they can mention how their previous educational qualifications and experiences helped them in attaining the proficiency. An overseas student should highlight how the education he has received so far has equipped him to get into the Oxbridge. The candidate should be positive about what he has learned so far.

The personal statements should have been written in continuous sentences and should not be like a list. Simple and descriptive sentences should be used. The candidates should not utter a lie in their statement. It should include two-thirds of the academic issues and the remaining part should be with regard to the interest of the candidates.

It has been cautioned by the university that there are many private companies who have Oxbridge or Cambridge in their names, thereby claiming that they could draft a winning personal statement. If the candidate has any doubt or needs clarifications regarding the procedure of writing the personal statements, then he can contact the Access Officer of the university with specific questions.

The UCAS would treat the applications of Oxford and Cambridge differently. The candidates must submit the application forms to Oxbridge before 15th of October which is also the usual deadline for UCAS forms. There is also a restriction with regard to Oxbridge that a candidate cannot apply simultaneously to both Cambridge and Oxford Universities. The cost of the application and the course fees differ from other institutions as several additional fees are applicable to Oxbridge.
