Real ID - Ally or Foe?

  Article By: Sandy S. Smith

The Real ID Act of 2005 is planned to battle terrorism, ID theft, and other crime by amplifying the security of bureaucratic-issued ID. The act calls on states to implement a set of minimum national standards in many areas:. Information and security features that will be included in each card. Proof of who you are, DOB, SSN, lawful status, and primary residential address. Verification of the source ID provided by an applicant.

The edict requires somebody trying to go in a Federal structure, fly on an airliner or open a credit account to use the nationally recognized Real ID or a passport. It would also put every identity holder in a central database. Sounds good, but the truth is that the Real ID obliterates on our privacy and invites hackers to steal personal information without making the country protected from terrorists or deterring illegal immigration.

Unhappily, Real ID is a disaster waiting to materialize. Some have even said that it is a indication of the apocalypse. The previous estimated expenditure was $14. 6 billion, it's been "reduced" to about $4 billion (a lot of money, isn't it?) by giving states greater flexibility in issuing licenses to elder Americans.

Real ID is a horrible idea, it means slow lines and more funds from you. It means the entire bureaucratic hassle of establishing your ID - to the satisfaction of the federal government - is shifted to your local Department of Motor Vehicles. The machine will authorize whether you can move, have a credit account, get a career, or have access to "Federal courts and facilities." What were once inalienable rights are now privileges requiring Big Brother say-so. Without Real ID you will not be able to:. Drive your vehicle. Board a aircraft, train, or bus. Enter any federal building.

As the Tea Party would note, this is an outrageous use of our own tax dollars. And these tax dollars are being used by Big Brother to take away our own privacy, rights, and freedom. Crazy, isn't it? Well, that's not all that Big Government is doing. They are shoving this down the states' throats too! Many states have taken notice, and some are doing something about it. Is yours?

Another western state joins the revolution --- The Utah House voted in early February 2010 for the state to opt out of the nationalized REAL ID Act in a predictable consequence to go up against what many legislators consider an imperious national government. "It's time we say, 'Federal government, stay away from this, let us handle it ourselves,'" said Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, the bill's sponsor. Sandstrom highlighted that his bill is supported by a widespread range of interest groups, from the American Civil Liberties Union to the Utah Eagle Forum. House members also liked it, approving it on a 68-3 vote and shooting it to the Senate. Of note,so far, 15 states have opted out of the act, whilst 13 others are considering it, Sandstrom said. As one authority recently stated, the Real ID Act is one small step at a time for man, one gigantic delay at DMV. In a stunning alignment of interests from the left and right, the transgendered community is as afraid about the act's implications as the conservatives are. Seemingly, privacy harks free in the United States! In yet another twist, Pennsylvania is refusing to employ Real ID until the government cough up more money!
