Why is the Data Recovery Industry booming?

  Article By: James Walsh

The data recovery industry has seen exponential growth since late 90s. The chief driving force behind this growth has obviously been the fact that the digitally stored data has increased by leaps and bounds. As more and more organisations move towards storing their data digitally, the possibility of losing the data owing to a hard disk drive crash or a problem with the software or logical parts of the computer also increases in accordance with the same.

Today organisations store all data in a digital format. Then they have adequate back ups to fall back upon in case of any emergency arising out of loss of data. We also have varied data centres mushrooming all over the world expressly as part of the contingency planning of different organisations.

There are various organisations that store data digitally. It includes big corporations to small enterprises. Right from the military organizations of the different countries to their space agencies, all store data in a digital format. Now even schools, universities and hospitals have begun to store relevant information on computers instead of the previous methodology of maintaining paper files and bundles of the same.

At homes also the need for data is growing day by day. Today data is required not only in the form of hard disk drives of personal computers but in a variety of other electronic media also. These include set top boxes, pen drives, digital cameras etc. Then people have back up plans and storage devices for data such as family photographs, which are of importance to them.

In the pre computer era, individuals and organisations had to worry about the possibility of fire or some natural calamity destroying or negatively affecting the paperwork. In the post computer era, on the other hand, almost everything is being stored digitally. Thus there is no longer the need to store data on reams of paper. Unfortunately this has not translated into a subsequent decrease in danger to the data.

Even in todays computer age, fire continues to prove a hazard for stored data. Its the same case with natural calamities like floods, tornadoes, volcanoes etc. Not only that, data theft has become increasingly a matter of concern for all organisations. In fact it may seem that the dangers to data have increased in the digital age.

As a result of the above stated factors there has been a constant mushrooming of companies that deal in the recovery of data, throughout the globe. These companies help their clients to recover data that might otherwise be given up as lost. Had it not been for data recovery companies, a substantial volume of information may have been lost to the mankind.

The increase in the numbers of these companies day by day, has its implications. These companies vie for work in an open market, enlisting the same category of clientele; resulting in slashing of prices across the board. As a result, data recovery companies have become more and more approachable for the common man.

Nevertheless, one fact stays constant and that is our ever-increasing need for data is causing digital data to grow manifolds over. Every day new gadgets are being developed, increasing storage of data. These new age data storage devices are fuelling a greater use of storage media.

With all this growth comes the fact of data getting destroyed increasingly. The destruction of data can be due to innumerable factors. Data can be lost owing to any physical damage to the storage medium, or other hardware related problems such as a hard disk crash, or because of a software or logical problem. In case the data is of vital importance to an individual or an organisation, then it must be recovered at a cost.

As it is not possible for a layman to recover data on his own, he or she is forced to fall back upon the services of a data recovery company. Though in the case of a software or logical problem with the data, there are numerous do it yourself kits available in the market, yet they may not be an answer to the problem at hand. That is the chief reason why the data recovery industry is booming.
